Spring 11 Trend Forecast

WOMEN’S RUNWAY
S/S 2011 REPORT TRENDSTOP.COM

Runway Report | Women’s: A Spring/Summer 2011 global round-up of emerging color, surface and material trends from across the four key cities where runway collections were shown. Analyzing decisive looks from major designers, next seasons trends are deciphered – from Jil Sander’s juicebox brights to Miu Miu’s heady metallic accents and feminine broderie anglaise- as we determine what you will be wearing next summer. Presented on Infomat, courtesy of Trendstop.com, the site known for great visuals and early trend identification.

Emerging Trends

Cadmium Yellow
Fresh, crisp and certainly not for the faint-hearted, Cadmium Yellow celebrates the heady exuberance of summer. Apply to floor-sweeping maxi-dresses, or geometric mini-dresses, as seen at Emilio de la Morena, for immediate visual impact; the shade works equally well on sheer tunics and high-waisted vintage-look swimwear – detailed with a coordinating yellow corsage.

Ice Blue
The antithesis of cadmium yellow, muted ice blue evokes a lady-like elegance; both flattering and wearable. Mulberry cinch a smart two-piece suit with a coordinating belt, whilst Doo Ri renders the color appropriate for evening with a subtle tone-on-tone print. And don’t overlook accessories – a patent peep-toe court with black edging is the perfect replacement for summer white.

Minimal Technicolor
A resounding rebuttal to Fall Winter’s neutral dominated palette, designers embrace a surprising optimism and experiment with heady color combinations. Jil Sander paired highlighter pink and safety orange with a deep indigo parka, Aquilano Rimondi clashed orange with lime, aqua, peach and coral; confidently pushing the boundaries of minimalism. Simple, pared down silhouettes provide the ultimate canvas for sophisticated hues, and ensure the color creates an immediate visual impact.

Butterfly
The fleeting delicacy of the butterfly informs surface and print design for Summer. Whilst three-dimensional details cluster on shoes and across sheer leggings at Aminaka Wilmont, threatening to consume and engulf the wearer, Loewe’s traditional illustrations jostle with Mila Schon’s stylized representations and Carlos Miele’s riotous color prints. Blumarine’s top-to-toe, oversized abstract print reiterates an emerging Seventies conceit, the aesthetic prevailing in Seduzioni Diamonds floor-sweeping sheer.

Hyper Bright Block Stripe
Eschewing the Breton tradition in favor of block stripes, designers create an immediate visual impact with discordant colorations. Vertical and horizontal stripes jostle for attention across Prada’s flapper dress, Ashish’s oversized sequin rugby shirt and Fendi’s curved hem wrap-over skirt. Jil Sander’s pink and white candy stripe and Sonia Rykiel’s oversized tote are easily incorporated into summer wardrobes, imbuing the everyday with a charming whimsy.

Snake
Dominating statement footwear -at Mark Fast, Etro and paired with coordinating hosiery at Krizia, incorporated into print and outerwear at Barbara Bui and Byblos, snake usurps the ubiquitous leopard print and reigns supreme as the animal skin of choice. Vibrant pink versions – applied to slinky satin at Just Cavalli and a simple knit dress at Z Spoke – ring with confident femininity – applied sparingly the print avoids the expected stereotype.

Broderie Anglaise
A summer classic, broderie anglaise in reinterpreted across classic and unexpected garments – from Collette Dinnigan’s simple dress with a scalloped zigzag hem to Issa’s glamorous trapeze dress and Thakoon’s biker. Working best across all-white looks, the fabrication references the pastoral sensibilities of prairie living – easy, uncomplicated and fuss-free. For a contemporary take, follow DSquared2′s example and apply to plunging hems.

Crochet
As knit celebrates an unrivalled Renaissance, crochet presents a viable Summer alternative. Subtle detailing on sleeves and hemlines lends a disheveled dishabille to Anne Valerie Hash’s simple dresses, or a playful conceit to red and white sun-dresses, as seen at D and G. Short and flirty lengths keep the look youthful, yet the detail also works for below the knee dresses, rendered in light pastel shades.

Leather Look Disco Shine
A timely celebration of the hedonistic Seventies, the excess of the decade informs shiny metallic leather look finishes. Nodding to the glam rock tradition, Marc Jacobs concludes a short-sleeve wrap-over jacket with an oversized corsage belt, whilst Balmain’s skinny-fit metallic red jeans are cropped above the ankle. A statement alternative to summer denim, opt for brash, oversized silhouettes that celebrate the excess of the fabrication.

It’s 604 Today!

Yes it is….June 4, 2010.  And today would be Max’s 17th Birthday.  That’s so hard for me to believe.  I wonder what he would look like, sound like, how tall would he be and would he pestering his younger brother or lifting him up.  What colleges would he want to apply to?  These are questions that I will never have answers to.  At one point, I might have been very sad about this, but time does heal and with all my amazing connections with Max, I am not sad but forever grateful for all the lessons that he has and continues to teach me.

So while the weather may be dismal today here in Portland, OR, we will be honoring and celebrating his life with a BBQ tonight.  We will release 17 blue balloons (that was his favorite color) to the heavens……even though he’ll probably be celebrating right along side us.   Of course, hot dogs will be on the menu since that’s what he would love.  So here’s to a little boy with a huge heart of gold and a very old soul, much wiser than his years, who has been a teacher to so many.  Happy Birthday Max!!

Accessorie Circuit in NYC

We had a great time in NYC and were so excited to be a part of the Accessorie Circuit Show. It was a true honor to be amongst designers like Juicy Couture, Velvet clothing, all the great blue jean lines, Rebecca Minkoff, Love Heals (one of my all time favorite jewelry designers), Foley + Corina handbags, Treesje handbags, Kooba and hundreds more.  I must admit, when I had a free moment, all I wanted to do was SHOP.  How could you not!  Some companies will allow you to buy “personals” which is always great…..so I will be getting my new necklace from Love Heals in June!

We learned a ton by being there, met some wonderful people and made great contacts with buyers and reps.  As it turns out, the two ladies at the booth next to ours who started Real Jewels,  jewelry made from recycled precious metals, used to be buyers from Bloomingdale’s and worked for my Uncle Marty back in the day.  He was the fine jewelry buyer for Bloomingdale’s most of his career.  We were all so amazed at this connection…I love when these synchronicities happen!

Here’s a look at our booth and some of our Fall 10 line…take a sneak peak as the Fall bags will not going to be on the website until July.

I LOVE Los Angeles

Well maybe not all parts of L.A like the traffic 24/7…. I was born and raised there and back in the day life in L.A. was so different; so much simpler.  I have fond summer memories of riding the bus every day to Manhatten Beach and soaking up the rays all day long with my dear friend Karen.  Bike riding with friends to the beach and along the bike trail for miles on end.  It was a very good life.

As I returned to L.A. last week to attend the LA Textile Show, I was reminiscing about my younger years of carefreeness.  In a way I felt that way again.  It was a very fun and informative trip.  I attended seminars on Spring 11 trends for fashion and color.  Walked rows of vendors scouting out fabrics, trims and hardware for inspiration.  I  met our amazing business coach, Sarah Shaw, and it was great to finally put a face behind a name.  I also met with Sheryl Cameron,  a former Nordstrom buyer and trend expert, to see how we could pair up in the future.  She too is incredibly knowledgeable in the field of fashion and design.

On my way to Chez Bop in Sunset Plaza, one of our new boutiques, I got to visit with owner Bonnie Baker.  What a kick in the pants!  We had some great laughs and I love her store…the decor is Parisian inspired and is filled with beautiful artisan clothing and accessories in bright colors which are sophisticated yet whimisical in style.  While Bonnie and I were chatting Chris Noth of Sex and the City walked by.  We ran out the door to catch a glimpse but only got a back side view.  Oh the wonders of Hollywood!  Bonnie used to be in the broadcast radio business and I got to hear her funny stories of working with Howard Stern.

I spent time with my brother and his wonderful girlfriend, Lizzy, my dear friend Gretchen and my parents.  My brother and I walked Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills and he was kind enough to indulge me by going into Jimmy Choo, Versace and Dolce & Gabbana.  Boy was that amazing!  Soaked up sunshine and relaxed.  It’s great to back home with my family but I do love L.A.

Coaching With Help From Above

Chris, my husband and biz partner, and I recently started working with Sarah Shaw, business coach extraordinaire, whose business name is Entrepenette.  Sarah used to have an incredibly successful handbag biz.  She sold her handbags to all the great stores like Bloomingdales, Saks, Henri Bendels, Anthropologie and 1200 boutiques nationwide and was in all the fabulous fashion magazines.  So who better to coach us??

Chris was to meet with Sarah on his latest trip to L.A. and show her our Spring 10 line in person.  With both their schedules so busy, Sarah suggested Chris meet her at her home office.  Since we had never been there before, I asked for her address to pass along to Chris.

When she responded, I had to take a deep breath and then smiled ear to ear.  Her street address is 1604.  Okay for those of you who have read my past blog posts, you know that “604″ is Max’s birthday (June 4) and when I see that number it is my sign that he’s around or giving us a heads up.  I couldn’t believe my eyes.  Thanks for your help once again Buddy.  This is all pretty amazing to me.  I know there are skeptics out there saying it’s just a coincidence but that certainly is not the way I see it.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

As we celebrate Valentine’s Day, I am always reminded of the healing power of love.

Today I am grateful for all the wonderful friends and family in our life who have supported us with their love and kindness through the years as we move through this journey called life.  Without their love I really don’t know where I’d be today.

For me Valentine’s Day is a time of mixed emotions, feelings of gratitude and feelings of sadness. February 15 will mark the 9 year anniversary of Max’s passing.  Max was all about unconditional love, so his leaving this world on that day is a true reflection of who he was.  As I watch old family movies, I am reminded of his gentle soul, huge loving heart and great dry sense of humor.  He was an old soul well beyond his 7 years here on Earth.  I feel blessed for the ongoing connection that I have with him.  Max comes to me in many ways and our relationship is as strong as ever.  For that I am very grateful.

One thing I know for sure is that love never dies and transcends all.

Happy Valentine’s Day!!
